About Us

Mission Statement

‘To promote and foster quality genealogical research services in County Donegal; to enable those with Donegal ancestors abroad and at home to research their family histories; to encourage greater interest and awareness in the county’s rich heritage and culture with the objective of boosting tourism and economic activity in the local community.’

Donegal Ancestry Limited operates the County Donegal Genealogy Centre and is compiling a database of records from the major genealogy sources for County Donegal. The database is used to provide a family history research service for people whose ancestors originated in the county. In the adjoining building is the Ramelton Story Exhibition. The exhibition tells the story of Ramelton from its earliest times until the present day. These two activities are mainly supported by FÁS training and employment programmes which provide people in the local community with an opportunity to retrain or acquire employment skills. The Centre is supported by Donegal County Council.

Donegal Ancestry Limited was formed in 1992 following the reorganisation of the local parish committee that initiated the genealogy project. The company is a non-profit organisation with charitable status and is administered by a Board of Directors. The Directors are voluntary and are drawn from the major churches, the local community and representatives from the public and private sectors. Donegal Ancestry Limited is based in a restored 19th century warehouse on the quayside and is managed by a small core staff and a number of full-time and part-time employees, employed mainly through FÁS sponsored training and employment programmes. Additional staffing and operational costs are met by fees received for family research and an annual contribution from Donegal County Council.

Donegal Ancestry Ltd is a member of the Irish Family History Foundation.
